Lubrication Importance

June 1st, 2007

Lubricants are almost more of a necessity than an accessory. They are a must for anal play, and often very useful for vaginal play. Older women often welcome some supplemental vaginal lubrication.

When a vibrator is touched to skin, particularly one of the stronger vibrators, the rapid back-and-forth motion can sometimes actually abrade the area. “Vibrator burn” can be a real nuisance. Consider applying a layer of lubricant before using the vibrator, particularly if you are using a strong vibrator on a sensitive body area. Such lubrication can make the sensation considerably more pleasant, even in the absence of problems.

Different lubricants are meant for different purposes. Lubricants basically are available in two general types: water-based and oil-based. The oil-based lubes, including most massage oils, tend to be a bit “heavier” but stay slippery longer. Unfortunately, they break down latex products such as latex condoms and gloves. Oil-based lubes, however, can be used with polyurethane products such as the Oral Dam, Trojan Supra Condoms and the Reality female condom. Some women report yeast infections following the use of particular lubes; oil-based ones seem to cause more frequent problems.

Special Reserve and other water-based lubes are generally “lighter” and don’t stay slippery as long, but this is easily fixed by adding a few drops of saliva or water. Simply Silk has non-sticky qualities that are superior yet water-soluble and latex/rubber compatible. Flavored “lickable” lubricants such as the “Puddles” are good for enhancing oral sex, particularly fellatio, but might be too sugary for penetration or cunnilingus.

Lubricants come with and without nonoxynol-9. This product is marketed as a spermicidal and works well in that role. It also kills various microorganisms. Nonoxynol-9 may play a limited role in the prevention of sexually transmitted disease, many seem allergic to it, and its use has diminished.
